Police have released an image of a man they want to speak with over a spate of allegedly violent robberies near Hamilton's busy entertainment precinct.

The Newcastle Heraldreported on Monday that detectives were investigating four alleged assaults and thefts as well as an attempted bag-snatch that occurred in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday morning last weekend and the one prior, as punters were in the midst of their night out.

The thefts have taken place between 1am and 3.30am on September 14, 15, 21 and 22 in May Street at Islington, Bennett and Samdon streets at Hamilton and Gregson Park near Beaumont Street.

The alleged victims have not been seriously injured during any of the incidents, police told the Newcastle Herald this week.

In each case, the alleged thieves asked for money or cigarettes before the victims were punched and had wallets and mobile phones taken.

Newcastle detectives believe all incidents are linked - similar methods have been used in each robbery.

The men in question are described as being Caucasian in appearance and aged between 18 and 25.

Newcastle City Police District crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Scott Parker said it was concerning these incidents occurred in such a short period of time.

"These crimes appear opportunistic in nature, and we intend to find those responsible in a swift manner," he said.

Anyone with information that could help investigators is being asked to contact Newcastle Police Station on 4929 0999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
