Robber who absconded from prison has been detained

A robber who absconded from an open prison near Bristol has been detained.

Dean Mellors vanished at around 5pm on Sunday (September 22).

Avon and Somerset Police launched a huge appeal following the 52-year-old's disappearance.

He is serving a custodial sentence for robbery and attempted rape.

But this evening a force spokesman has confirmed that Mellors has been detained.

He said: "The prisoner who absconded from HMP Leyhill on Sunday evening, 22 September, has handed himself in.

"Police officers in Kingswood, Gloucestershire, detained Dean Mellors, 52, this afternoon, Monday 23 September.

"We’d like to thank everyone who called with information or shared our appeal to trace him."
