Robber jailed for nine years over hammer attack which left store worker in hospital

A robber who attacked a Lenton shopkeeper with a hammer leaving her with horrific injuries has been jailed.

Kosav Mohammadi, 26, of Dexter Street, Derby, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, assault with intent to rob, having an article with a blade or point and having an offensive weapon.

Armed with a knife and hammer, Mohammadi entered the Best One convenience store, on Derby Road, Lenton, at around 11pm on May 1.

Police said a member of the public went into the store and saw Mohammadi attacking the shopkeeper. He left the store and quickly called 999 before going back inside.

He saw the shopkeeper was on the ground with Mohammadi stood over her. She was grabbing at her attacker as she tried to protect herself.

The witness shouted that he'd called the police who were on their way and he saw something being thrown across the store, believing this may have been a hammer.

The shopkeeper managed to get up from the floor and left the store, with Mohammadi still inside and holding a hammer.

She and the witness held the shop door shut to try and keep Mohammadi inside but they moved back after he smashed it with the hammer.

Mohammadi left the store and threw the hammer towards the shopkeeper, who was sheltered behind a car, before he ran off.
