Robber jailed after targeting woman as she withdrew money at Gateshead cashpoint

A robber who targeted a woman as she withdrew money at a cash machine has been jailed.

Kayla Banton tussled with the victim after she took out £200, which she snatched from her grasp.

However, security guards who had been working nearby, in Gateshead, intervened and stopped her.

Banton, 31, who was already on two suspended prison sentences at the time, was found to be in possession of a screwdriver when police searched her.

Now she has been jailed for 12 months at Newcastle Crown Court after she admitted robbery.

The victim, who got her money back, said in a statement she felt "scared" and added: "When I think about it I feel more vulnerable and anxious.

"I could have been seriously injured."

The victim was at an ATM on Coatsworth Road, Gateshead, on April 3 this year when she was targeted.

Banton, of no fixed address, admitted robbery and having an offensive weapon.

Judge Robert Adams sentenced Banton to 12 months behind bars.

The judge told her: "Not surprisingly, she was scared. It was an unexpected attack on her and snatch of her money."

Rachel Hedworth, defending, said Banton is "extremely sorry" for what she did and has a background of mental health issues and "extremely chaotic" lifestyle.

Miss Hedworth said Banton has taken steps while in custody on remand to address her "addictions and offending behaviour".
