Robber held knife to man's throat after motorist was 'duped' into offering his Mercedes for test drive

A man was robbed and had a knife put to his throat after being 'duped' into offering a test drive of his car.

He had been out washing his Mercedes C200 at his home in Chadderton, Oldham, when a man asked whether he was interested in selling the vehicle.

Later he returned with two other men, at about 7pm on January 23, and told him he was interested in buying the Mercedes and wanted to take a test drive.

After driving for about 10 minutes, Michael Daly, the front seat passenger, produced a knife and put it to the victim's throat.

Daly, 22, demanded he handed over his wallet and phone.

After refusing to reveal the PIN number to his phone, another unidentified man sat in the back of the car headbutted him three times.

The victim was pushed out of the car and watched on as it sped off.

Minutes later, his bank cards were used by Daly to buy a bottle of vodka and cigarettes.

The driver of the car hasn't been identified.

Prosecuting, Andy Evans told how the Mercedes was driven around Manchester into the early hours.

It twice stopped for petrol and made off without paying, and its number plates were changed.

Prosecutors said it is not clear who was driving the car at this point.

Later the Mercedes was located in Newton Heath, with Daly behind the wheel.

Police pursued the car, which reached speeds of 55mph in a 30mph zone during a chase which lasted for more than a mile.

Daly fled on foot but was caught by police, and later discovered to be more than twice the drink drive limit.

Another man, Patrick Daly, was in the car with two women who were not prosecuted.

Now Michael Daly has been jailed for five-and-a-half years.

Patrick Daly, 39, of no fixed address, was sentenced to three months for aggravated vehicle taking.

For Michael Daly, Michael Johnson said the defendant was not an 'instigator' of the robbery, and described it as 'impulsive' offending which wasn't thought through.

The lawyer described the robbery as 'instant gratification for no long term benefit'.

Sentencing, Judge Alan Conrad QC told Michael Daly: "This was a vicious and determined robbery in which you played a significant part.

"A trusting man was duped into going for a test drive, during the course of which you produced a knife and held it to his throat."

Michael Daly, of Sandyhill Road, Blackley, admitted robbery, possession of a bladed article, fraud, handling stolen goods, dangerous driving and drink driving.

He was also banned from driving for almost five years.

Following the case, Detective Constable Liam Carolan, of GMP's City of Manchester Division, said: "Daly thought he was above the law, threatening an innocent member of the public to take what he wanted and acting with absolutely no thought for the safety others.

"I hope that this sentence sends a clear message that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated in Greater Manchester and we will do everything within our powers to bring offenders of this nature to justice.

"This period behind bars should give Daly the time he needs to reflect on his reckless actions and the impact of his shocking behaviour."
