Robber attacked delivery driver outside Paisley nursery

A Deliveroo driver who was robbed and attacked in the grounds of a nursery was rescued by staff.

Father-to-be Jason Haughie, 25, pounced on terrified Mohammed Mutaha and warned him: “Give me everything you have”, forcing him to run away.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Haughie chased Mr Mutaha before cornering him outside a childcare centre, where he kneed him in the face and stole his £400 mobile phone.

Nursery staff who witnessed the attack contacted police for help.

Procurator Fiscal Depute David McDonald told the court Mr Mutaha was working in the town and had dropped off an order at a property in West Street before returning to his car around 3.30pm.

He said: “He returned to the car park where he walked to his vehicle.

“On arrival Haughie appeared and stated, ‘Give me everything you have.’

“Mr Mutaha ran off, running into George Street, then across the road towards St Mary’s Church, with Haughie chasing him.

“He ended up at the entrance to a nursery. Haughie caught up with him and pulled him to the ground by grabbing his jacket and hood, causing the hood to rip from the jacket.

“Mr Mutaha fell to the ground where he grabbed hold of hand rails attached to the doorway.

“He had his mobile phone in his hand when Haughie struck him on the head with his knee, causing him to drop the phone.”

The court heard the victim got to his feet and pushed his way past Haughie into the nursery foyer.

The fiscal added: “When he tried to retrieve his phone, Haughie pushed him and said, ‘Give me money and I will give you the phone.’

“Nursery staff who witnessed the incident ushered Haughie from the foyer and contacted police.”

He appeared via video link from HMP Low Moss where he pleaded guilty to a charge chasing, demanding money, and assaulting and robbing Mr Mutaha of his mobile phone on November 18 last year.

Defence agent Amy Spencer said her client had been blighted by a horror addiction to drugs, but was attempting to turn his life around.

She said: “He is pleading guilty to the offence. There has been a significant life event for him. He will become a father for the first time in June this year and this offence was committed against the background of substance misuse.

“This has given him time to think about others more than himself, and I would ask the court considers assessing him for a Drug Treatment and Testing Order as part of its disposal.”

Sheriff David Pender remanded Haughie in custody to call for background reports, and warned him he is facing jail time.

He said: “I will adjourn this indictment to call for a Criminal Justice Social Work Report and a risk assessment about whether the court should consider a supervised release order or an extended sentence.”

Haughie will discover his fate on March 29.
