Rob Ryan says it ‘made no sense’ that he was out of work for two years

In 2019, Redskins coach Rob Ryan will have his coaching reach restricted to the inside linebackers in Washington — something he hasn’t done in 13 years.

As an NFL-lifer, Ryan has seen more than a decade heading up defenses and coordinating what happens on the field. Now, after two years spent away from the game reportedly waiting for a phone call and a new job offer, Ryan is willing to swallow his pride and show that he still has a lot to give as a defensive coach in the league.

“When you’re out of a job, you need people to step up and help you,” he said, via Redskins.com. “I’m not a charity case at all, I’m a great coach. But to be out of work that long makes no sense. It made no sense. But it humbles you and you come back with a good attitude.”

The profile piece by the Redskins team website shows an unveiled look at Ryan’s struggle with being out of the game for two years. Ryan admitted that he spent a lot of time waiting by the phone for a coaching offer and that his ego took a hit when he realized that in his words, “no one cares that you’re fired.”

After swallowing his pride and reaching out to the Redskins, he obtained the Inside Linebackers coaching position in Washington. Now he is set out to prove that the lack of calls in his past was a mistake; he is still a prime coaching candidate in the NFL.
