Rob Pelinka continues to conduct the search for the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and Friday’s chapter will include the most familiar face in the process.
Former Cavaliers head coach Ty Lue is set to meet with Pelinka on Friday, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Unlike the meeting with Monty Williams, Friday’s meeting will take place near Pelinka’s Orange County home, according to Dave McMenamin. Pelinka reportedly met with Williams on the East coast between Games 2 and 3 of Philadelphia’s series against Brooklyn.
Now, it may be reading too much into things, but it does seem notable that Pelinka made Lue come to him but was willing to make the trip to meet with Williams. Marc Stein of the New York Times reported earlier this week that the chatter within league circles indicated that Williams has a ‘stronger-than-expected’ shot at the job due to worries about the optics of giving control to a LeBron confidant like Lue.
Whether that’s actually a smart strategy is another story, considering handing the keys over to LeBron might be the last hopeful strategy the Lakers have left.
