Rob Page signs new Wales deal and targets next two tournaments after reaching World Cup

Rob Page has finalised a new contract to Wales boss at this winter’s World Cup and potentially two further tournaments.

Page deputised for Ryan Giggs at Euro 2020 last summer after the former Manchester United winger was placed on ‘special leave’ since being arrested and bailed over assault allegations in November 2020. Now, Page has been confirmed on a new four-year deal, including the qualifying campaigns for Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, after Giggs officially stood down this summer.

Page, 48, said: “There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team and I can’t wait for the challenge the next four years will bring, starting with our first World Cup in 64 years.

“This is an exciting time for Welsh football and I hope we can make the country proud in November and continue our success by qualifying for more major tournaments in the future.”

Since Giggs was placed on special leave, Page has secured Nations League promotion into group A4, reached the last 16 of the Euro 2020 and made history in June as Wales reached the World Cup for the first time since 1958 via a tense play-off final with Ukraine.

FAW President Steve Williams said: “I am delighted that Rob has agreed a four-year contract to take the Cymru Men’s national team to the next stage.

“The World Cup is the perfect opportunity to show Wales on the world stage and I am positive that Rob is the best person for the role, in Qatar and beyond.”

On Wednesday, Page is set to name his squad for next month’s Nations League matches as Wales will face Belgium in Brussels on Thursday September 22 and Poland in the Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday September 25.

Giggs faces a retrial next summer over allegations he assaulted his ex-girlfriend after jurors failed to reach verdicts following more than 20 hours of deliberations in his recent four-week trial.
