Rob McElhenney 'fixes' social media graphic ahead of Wrexham's crunch promotion clash

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney edited himself and fellow owner Ryan Reynolds out of a poster previewing his side’s potential promotion-clinching match on Saturday.

The Red Dragons are on the cusp of securing automatic promotion to the Football League as they sit atop the National League standings, just one point clear of Notts County with a game in hand. Wrexham can secure promotion with a win over Boreham Wood on Saturday evening.

Ahead of the mammoth non-league contest, McElhenney - who purchased Wrexham alongside Reynolds in November 2020 - rather selflessly edited a BT Sport poster that previously displayed the Hollywood duo with striker Chris Mullin and goalkeeper Ben Foster. Instead, the ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ creator added Luke Young and Ollie Palmer.

Young is a midfielder who has featured in 38 contests during the 2022/23 campaign, scoring two goals. Meanwhile, Palmer is a striker who has contributed 17 goals alongside Mullin’s exploits while playing in all 43 league games this season.

Wrexham looked like they were well on track to achieve promotion when the club secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Notts County. However, a goalless draw at Barnet opened the title race back up.

Callum McFadzean received a straight red card during the second half after appearing to leave a foot in on goalkeeper Laurie Walker. After the match, manager Phil Parkinson was also sent off after angrily clashing with Walker. However, Wrexham’s fate is in their hands - and there is more than promotion on the line for the players.

According to the Daily Mail, Reynolds and McElhenney are set to reward the squad with a £200,000 bonus for their epic efforts. After their takeover of the Welsh club, the duo offered a bonus to their players should they attain promotion back to the football pyramid - with the figure negotiated by club captain Ben Tozer.

Wrexham are on the verge of raking in the money as they approach the final hurdle. The Red Dragons need three points from their final two games to seal promotion, facing off against Boreham Wood on Saturday before a final day contest against Torquay United.
