Rob Lowe has described alcoholism and his recovery as a ‘“gift” that ultimately paved the way for his success and happiness later in life.
The actor attributed his acting career and close relationship with his family to his illness and his rehabilitation when he accepted the Spirit of Sobriety award this weekend.
"Being in recovery has given me everything of value that I have in my life," he said. "Integrity, honesty, fearlessness, faith, a relationship with God, and most of all gratitude.
"It's given me a beautiful family and an amazing career. I'm under no illusions where I would be without the gift of alcoholism and the chance to recover from it."
The 51-year-old has starred in Parks & Recreation, Behind the Candelabra and is currently appearing in the drama You, Me and The Apocalypse. Lowe has been sober for almost years and described his battle with alcoholism in his book, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, published in 2011.
He has been candid about his experiences with alcoholism in the past and positive about his time in rehab, describing it as "one of the most exhilarating, liberating and exciting four weeks of my life” in his autobiography.
