Rob Lee and Newcastle United greats join calls for takeover explanation as petition soars

Rob Lee 'would love to know' why Newcastle United's takeover did not go through and has urged supporters to sign a petition calling for an independent investigation into the Premier League's takeover process.

The former Magpies' skipper is one of a number of former players, including Faustino Asprilla and Robbie Elliott, who have highlighted the petition on Twitter in the last 24 hours.

More than 55,000 people have signed the petition on change.org - which was launched by a former season ticket holder following the decision by Amanda Staveley, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and the Reuben Brothers to walk away from the deal on Thursday.

On Monday morning, Lee urged his followers to sign the petition before adding that he 'would love to know why the takeover didn't go through'.

Just a few hours previously, Asprilla, Lee's former team-mate, called on supporters to 'please sign the petition' while Elliott also tweeted out the link to it.

The buyers withdrew their offer because of the 'prolonged process under the current circumstances coupled with the global uncertainty'.

Staveley has claimed that the Premier League wanted Saudi Arabia, the country itself, to become a director of the club and said 'if the fans want this back on, then they’re going to have to go to the Premier League and say this isn’t fair'.

The financier has since spoken to Alex Hurst, the chair of the Newcastle United Supporters' Trust (NUST) on the phone and the NUST have experienced a large increase in membership and received hundreds of emails with feedback on what the trust does next ahead of reaching out to the Premier League.

Despite a number of requests from ChronicleLive in the last few days, the Premier League have refused to comment on the takeover fallout.
