Rob Kearney training with local GAA club 17 years after last playing for them

Rob Kearney is training with his local GAA club as he eyes a return to Gaelic football.

The rugby ace last played for Cooley Kickhams 17 years ago, but it is understood that he could feature for them again in the coming weeks.

Kearney, who is Ireland's most decorated rugby player, spent last season playing for Western Force in Australia after moving Down Under last year, but he was released by the club in July.

When asked what was next for him after leaving the Australian club last month, Kearney hinted at a return to Gaelic football.

He told the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Today FM: "I'm not really sure. I get asked this question every few days and I still don't have any answers.

"Potentially, I might do another season playing rugby but I suppose, to be honest with you, I've had a little bit of enough of it at the moment. If that doesn't happen, happy days.

"I always loved Gaelic football growing up. I'd like to get back into a little bit of that in a casual way."

Kearney's last appearance for Cooley came in the 2004 Louth Senior Football Championship final, which they lost to St Patricks, before he signed a professional contract with Leinster.

He has since won two Grand Slams in four Six Nations titles, four European titles, six Pro14 medals and a Challenge Cup. He was also named European Player of the Year in 2012 and travelled on two Lions tours.
