Rob Kearney makes GAA return with Cooley Kickhams against Newtown Blues

Rob Kearney played for his local GAA club for the first time in 17 years on Sunday.

The Irish rugby legend lined out for Cooley Kickhams in a league match against the Newtown Blues.

But there was no winning return for Kearney as the Blues ran out winners by 3-12 to 0-09 at Fr McEvoy Park.

Sharing a picture on Instagram after the game, the former Leinster star said: "Kicked my fair share of wides but great to be back on the GAA pitch."

The 35-year-old, who returned to Ireland during the summer after being released by Australian side Western Force, played at full forward in the match.

Cooley club secretary Brian Rafferty revealed Kearney was training with the club earlier this month, telling RTE: "He’s back training with the club.

"Our seniors and juniors train together. We have 41 or 42 fellas that train together and then three coaches there to look after them.

"Rob is trying to give something back to the club. He felt that he always had to do that.

"He left when he was young but always supported the club and we have welcomed him back with open arms.

"He’s one of our own and he said that last night. Any time he was here he was always welcome at the club. He was straight into the fold and he’s taking it from there and he’s going to see how he gets on."
