Rob Howley alleged betting scandal latest as WRU chiefs to meet this week

Rob Howley will face a Welsh Rugby Union disciplinary panel if it’s found he has a case to answer after being accused of breaching the sport’s betting regulations .

WRU chairman Gareth Davies dismissed the idea of the matter being dealt with by experts from outside the organisation.

“I don’t think there’s a need for an independent panel,” the former Wales captain said on Wednesday.

“My colleagues within the union are handling it and [are] in regular contact with Rob and the outcome will be the outcome when it arrives.

“It will be transparent from the sense that everything will be looked at in terms of any findings that come through.”

Davies said the case is due to be discussed at a meeting of WRU power-brokers on Thursday (November 7).

Wales attack coach Howley was sent home from the Rugby World Cup by the union pending an investigation into a potential breach of World Rugby betting rules.

World Rugby bosses have a strict rule prohibiting anyone involved in rugby, including players, coaches, backroom staff, agents and match officials, from betting on the sport.

The WRU launched an investigation into the conduct of outgoing Wales coach Warren Gatland's loyal lieutenant Howley and a potential breach of those rules, with the ex-Wales skipper leaving Japan before a match had been played.

Davies, speaking at the Principality Stadium while attending the launch of this season’s Heineken Champions Cup, said: "There’s an investigation ongoing and that’s it.

"It’s a case of getting it done properly.

"As we said when we were in Japan this isn’t about speed, it’s about being fair and coming up with a proper investigation which thoroughly investigates."

Howley's contract with the WRU ran out at the end of the World Cup.

He had been expected to become head coach of Italy but that position is set to be filled by former South Africa and ex-Newport RFC outside-half Franco Smith.
