Rob Holding picture special: Arsenal defender hands Unai Emery a massive injury boost

After eight months on the sidelines, Rob Holding is back in action.

The Gunners defender was enjoying a decent run in the team until his 2018/2019 season came to an end prematurely in the 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford last December.

After an awkward landing, Holding had to be substituted in the first-half and later that week it was confirmed he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee and was facing up to nine months on the sidelines.

A month ahead of schedule, Holding featured for the Arsenal U23's against Watford at London Colney on Saturday afternoon.

It remains to be seen when the 23-year-old is ready for a return to first-team action, but it's likely that head coach Unai Emery will ease the defender back slowly to avoid risking a recurrence.

Once fully fit, Holding is set to play a big part for the Gunners this season.

With Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi both being linked with moves away this summer, there's a chance Holding could end the season as the club's first-choice centre-back.

Furthermore, he's being tipped as a future Arsenal captain by Nigel Winterburn.

"Unai Emery doesn’t want one captain, he wants four or five but as I’ve always said: you become a captain when you walk onto the pitch anyway," he explained to 888 Sport.

"You have the same responsibilities as a captain because if something is happening in a game that you’re not happy with you should have the confidence and the authority to organise those players in front of you differently, particularly if you’re coming under pressure down your side.

"You can’t look across at the captain and say ‘we need to do this’. It could be too late. So you have to take the role of captain when you’re playing anyway.

"So there is not more pressure on giving the captaincy to someone like Holding who is young. I remember from my time when Tony Adams did it.

"There were also times when I was captain myself and I didn’t do anything differently: I wasn’t more or less vocal."

But the focus for Holding at the moment is more game time as he builds towards full fitness and Saturday was a step in the right direction.
