Rob Gronkowski claims damage from head injuries is ‘fixable’

Earlier this week, the retired Rob Gronkowski informed CBS News in an interview that he “probably had like 20 concussions in my life” that included “like five blackout ones.”

Yet he said he would let his kid play football, because he would “educate him on what I went through” because injuries are “fixable.”

It was that word that came up again, but it was in reference to head injuries.

Chris Nowinski, the co-founder and CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation, tweeted at the former New England Patriots tight end and pointed out that CTE — the brain disease that can be caused by repeated head injuries — “cannot be fixed.”

Gronkowski claimed it was:

Nowinski responded by disagreeing and asking to meet with him:

Perhaps Gronk has undergone some yet-to-be-revealed therapy that has helped him after so much head trauma — both diagnosed and otherwise. And yes, we still have a long way to go when it comes to the science surrounding the disease — in 2016, the New York Times ran a headline reading “On CTE and Athletes, Science Remains in its Infancy.”

But Gronk, who is not a medical professional, has to be much more careful making those claims. He should absolutely take up Nowinski on the invitation.
