Rob Elliot's amusing Newcastle takeover saga experience as he talks Buffon and signing 'superstars'

Newcastle United players 'don't know much' about the club's takeover saga and Rob Elliot joked that the dressing room would not be given the heads up regardless because new owners would 'sack' them all and buy 'a load of superstars'.

Mike Ashley agreed to sell the club to a Saudi-backed consortium last year but the buyers - Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), the Reuben Brothers and Amanda Staveley - encountered complications with the Premier League's owners' and directors' test.

Although the PIF walked away from the bid last summer, ChronicleLive revealed on August 4 that Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund would be prepared to revisit the deal if the Premier League were willing to give the green light.

All eyes are currently on Newcastle's legal battle with the Premier League after the Magpies issued arbitration proceedings against the top-flight.

Elliot, who is now at Watford, was entering the final months of his contract when the bid first came to light and a takeover was never closer in the goalkeeper's nine years at the club.

"Whenever I see anyone, they always ask us what's going on and stuff and to be honest with you, as players, we don't know much," Elliot told the What's Next podcast.

"When the takeover was going on, everyone was like, 'What's going on? What's going on?' I don't know!

"If the Saudis come in with all this money to spend, do you think they're going to give me a new contract or go out and sign [Gianluigi] Buffon?

"They're basically not going to tell the lads because they're just going to sack all of us anyway and buy a load of superstars so they're not going to tell us they're coming in. I always try and say that to people.

"They're not going to say, 'Oh yeah, the takeover is happening lads. Get ready. Oh, by the way, we've just signed four superstars tonight and we don't need any more goalies anymore!'"
