Roar's Papadopoulos banned for seven weeks for spitting

Brisbane Roar defender Avram Papadopoulos has been suspended for seven matches for spitting at Sydney FC's Matt Simon in an A-League match last month.

The penalty was handed down today by the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee and includes one match already served.

The incident occurred in the second half of a round 8 match on November 25 at Allianz Stadium.

Papadopoulos, a former Greek international who was born in Melbourne, apologised via a club statement immediately after the 3-1 defeat and was reportedly distraught over his actions.

The 32-year-old was red-carded after a long stoppage as the video referee reviewed the incident.

The club has not yet decided whether it will appeal the suspension.

"I would like to once again apologise for my actions in our match in Sydney on November 25 and take this opportunity to thank the club, Professional Footballers Australia, and barrister Mr Simon Philips for their support throughout this process," Papadopoulos said after learning his fate.
