Roadworks on busy Dumfries Street to repair water leak cause chaos

Roadworks on a busy Dumfries street caused traffic chaos in the town yesterday.

Scottish Water staff received a report of a leak at the roundabout next to St Michael’s Services on Friday.

Traffic lights were installed on Sunday to allow for road reinstatement after the leak was fixed.

However, the four-way traffic light system caused lengthy delays.

Disgruntled drivers took to social media to vent their frustration.

One motorist said: “Why would they decide to dig up the road on a Sunday then not work on resolving the issue as soon as possible?

“Everyone in the local area knows if you do any road work on St Michaels Street you can effectively bring Dumfries to a gridlock.

“If it was emergency work, then why weren’t there workers there? If it was planned, where was the notification as previously done on that road with electronic signs?”

Another driver added: “There were big queues everywhere and that was at 9.30am.

“It’s actually happened at one of the worst possible places in the town. Not only have you got St Joseph’s College, you’ve also got St Michael’s Primary, St Andrew’s just up the road, a lot of people work at the Crichton and old hospital and then there’s the college campus too.

"It’s a bit of a mess.”

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “The reinstatement is being inspected this afternoon (Monday). Once the tar has cooled then the temporary traffic management should be removed and road back to normal tonight.”
