Roadworks misery in Rutherglen as work begins on Hamilton Road

Motorists in Rutherglen are facing two months of roadworks misery after Scottish Water began digging up Hamilton Road on Monday.

Two-way traffic lights are now in operation as the water supplier begins an eight-week programme of works to improve its waste water infrastructure and the replacement of 60 metres of pipe work.

Scottish Water says the works are aimed at reducing flooding. This temporary road traffic management measure, which is required so that the work can be carried out safely, has been agreed with South Lanarkshire roads department and other relevant organisations.

Georgina Reid, corporate affairs manager in the west, said: “The work being done here follows emergency works to repair a collapsed sewer which were carried out in Hamilton Road just before Christmas.

“At that time, we identified this need for further improvement work to help reduce the risk of local flooding in heavy rainfall. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience and thank road users and local residents for their patience and understanding while these essential works are carried out.”

Scottish Water staff and contractors will adhere to Scottish Government Covid-19 guidance for the construction industry and the public.

Measures will be in place to ensure safe working and allow for safe distancing by the company’s workforce, as well as ensuring the safety of people in the communities and locations where it is working.
