Roads shut after reports of suspicious package on bus at Salford Quays

A number of roads around Salford Quays were sealed off this afternoon following reports of a suspicious package on a bus.

A large number of police vehicles and fire engines were seen arriving in the area shortly before 2.25pm.

Passenger were evacuated from a bus while a large scene was put in place, near to The Lowry.

Pictures show a green bus inside a police cordon.

Officers say the item found on the bus has since been assessed and deemed safe.

They say there is no risk to the public and roads have since been reopened.

In a statement, GMP said: "Shortly before 2.25pm today, police were called to reports that a suspicious item had been found on a bus at The Quays in Salford.

"The bus was evacuated as a precaution and several roads were closed.

"A cordon is currently in place but the item has been assessed and confirmed safe.

"There is no risk to the public and roads will reopen shortly."

The incident came just over an hour after Piccadilly Gardens was evacuated amid reports of a 'suspicious package on a bus'.

Pictures and video from the scene in the city centre show large numbers of police officers in the area.

A number of businesses were evacuated while members of the public were told to avoid the area.
