Roads police in Midlothian get tough on drivers for not giving cyclists enough room

Roads police have been getting tough on drivers who don't give cyclists enough room when overtaking in Midlothian.

Officers were this week out and about in the Penicuik area as part of Operation Close Pass.

Through the operation plain clothed officers head out on a bike, fitted with a camera, in a bid to detect drivers who get too close. Offenders are then pulled over by a police car stationed further ahead and spoken to by officers.

And while patrolling parts of the A701, south of the Gowkley Moss area, they stopped ten drivers.

Nine of them were given the 'chat on the mat' treatment. This is all about showing the driver the correct minimum passing distance of 1.5 metres.

Breaking this rule could result in three penalty points.

One driver was given a fixed penalty for using a mobile phone.

Edinburgh Live reported in May that more than 50 drivers had been pulled over in Holyrood Park as part of the operation.
