Bomb scare near Glasgow sparks road closure amid 'unexploded wartime device' concerns

Police were forced to close two sliproads near Glasgow today (January 24) after a bomb scare.

Officers were alerted to an area near to the A8 in Shawhead, Coatbridge, around 2:45pm following the discovery of what was thought to be an unexploded wartime device.

As a precaution, the on and off ramp from the A725 to the A8 was closed as a precaution, with Traffic Scotland issuing an alert to drivers to find an alternative route.

However, following the arrival of the EOD (Explosives Ordnance Disposal), on examination it was confirmed that the item, identified as a gas canister, posed no threat to the public.

"The EOD (Explosives Ordnance Disposal) attended and following examination it was confirmed that the item, identified as a gas canister, posed no threat to the public.

"The on and off ramp from the A725 to the A8, which was closed as a precaution at the time, is now open."
