Roads in the UK are so hot right now that people's shoes are sticking to them

It probably hasn't escaped your notice that it's rather warm in Wales at the minute. And by 'warm', we of course mean completely sweltering.

This week saw the hottest day of the year so far in Wales, with temperatures only set to soar further by the weekend. The Met Office has now extended its rare severe weather warning for heat for a second time, meaning temperatures in parts of Wales could be more than 30°C for three days in a row.

Temperatures could reach highs of 34°C in Cardiff at the start of next week, with the forecast service saying the heatwave could peak on Monday or Tuesday. Get the latest Wales weather news and forecasts sent straight to your inbox for free by signing up to our newsletters.

The heatwave has taken its toll already with demand for fans and paddling pools soaring while some businesses have even made the decision to close to protect their staff from the high temperatures. But as some people are now discovering, it's so hot that roads across the UK are starting to melt.

Several people have taken to TikTok since the heatwave began to share the effects of the extreme weather, with many taking note of the tarmac melting beneath their feet. One woman was even left with her shoe stuck to the road due to the melting surface, having to peel it off as the road absorbed the heat.

When she lifted her trainer up to the camera after walking on the sticky ground, her shoe's white sole had turned black. Stay up to date with the latest viral TikTok trends and videos by clicking here.

Another clip saw an Australian woman living in the UK also discover that the road beneath her was starting to melt. In the video, user @mlbeukes says: "I wanted to show you this. This is how true our heatwave is," as she starts to pick at pieces of melted tarmac.

She adds: "Our tar has melted on the road and we can now pull out all the pieces like we did in Darwin. Look at that! That's like flashbacks. Love it, we can do it everywhere." However, she later admitted that, having grown up in Australia, the sight of a slightly melted road was really "nothing".

Viewers on TikTok left mixed comments on the videos. While many warned that it was a sign of things to come, others said that the phenomenon was nothing new.

"Too hot to handle," said one, while another added: "That's not even the worst of it. The Amber danger to life warning on Sunday is now stretched into all of Monday." Others said they had experience the same, with one writing: "I had that today on the motorbike and had to scrub the tar off when I got back," while another said: "They've got gritters out by me because of it."

However, many weren't that impressed, with one writing: "It happens every year, why are people surprised?". Others were left reminiscing, with another viewer adding: "The summer of 1976 was the same, we could smell the tar like it was just laid. We used to poke it with a stick and it would cling to it, it was so melted then."
