Police called to 'suspicious package' in Cwmbran town centre

Police have been called to an incident involving a 'suspicious package' in a Welsh town centre.

A number of roads have been closed off due to the "incident" in Cwmbran, after police were called at around 5.10pm on Saturday, August 31.

St David's Road and the surrounding streets have been closed off.

At approximately 9pm, Gwent Police posted to Facebook, writing: "The incident in St David’s Road in Cwmbran is still ongoing at this time.

"At approximately 5.10pm this evening, we received a call from a member of the public regarding a suspicious package which was found in the St David’s Road area of Cwmbran.

"Emergency Services are at the scene and a cordon has been put in place in the surrounding area.

"Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) are attending the location shortly in order to assess the package and we will be able to provide you with a further update.

"At this stage we do not believe there is a risk to the public however we are taking the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of everyone. Thank you for your patience.

"If anyone has any information regarding this incident, please call 101 quoting Log 345 31/8/19."

Steven Nott, 51, from Cwmbran, saw the officers attend the scene. He said: "Police cordoned off half of town centre for ages.

"Lots of police vehicles involved, plenty of onlookers... caused mayhem around the town."
