Roads remain closed in Kirkby after a fire broke out at a building next to a derelict church.
Four fire engines and police were sent to the scene on Brook Hey Drive at around 4.15pm on Saturday, May 8.
When they arrived fire crews found a building close to St Mark's Church to be well alight.
Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, used hose reel jets and a main branch to tackle the fire internally.
A total of six fire engines are now at the scene where the incident is ongoing, according to Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.
People are being asked to avoid the area and residents are being warned to keep their windows and doors shut.
A spokesperson from the fire service said: "MFRS now have six engines at the scene.
"The incident, which involves a number of seats of fire, has been divided into 2 sectors.
"Internally, crews are hot spotting. A 9m ladder has been established in sector 2 with firefighters in rag harness operating hose reel jets on to the roof."
Photos taken at the scene this evening show fire engines lining Brook Hey Drive, along with several police cars.
Fire fighters can be seen using a ladder to extinguish the blaze from above.
