Roads around Alder Hey Hospital set to be hit with public parking bans

Extensive new parking restrictions are set to come into force for roads near a major hospital where residents say they are sometimes subjected to threats by abusive drivers.

The move, which was approved by councillors this evening, could eventually mean upwards of 30 roads around Alder Hey Hospital could be brought under a residents-only permit parking scheme.

Some of the hospital's neighbours have labelled the roads close to it "dangerous" and "an accident waiting to happen" because of the sheer number of cars that currently park on them.

And residents said they had been threatened and had their cars damaged when they had challenged drivers who had blocked their drives or parked inconsiderately.

But while councillors hailed the plans as a whole, errors with a consultation mean the entire scheme couldn't be approved tonight.

Councillor James Noakes, Liverpool's highways chief, said he was "really disappointed" with the way that situation, which affects an area around Alder Road, had been handled.

People living in that area will have to be consulted again before the scheme can be approved there.

However officers said they believed the new consultation on that area could be done while the parking permit system, which will eventually affect more than 30 roads around the hospital, was being prepared elsewhere.

That preparation is set to take around two months, with hopes that the last part of the scheme could be approved in a similar amount of time and then come into force.

The permit parking scheme, which is being funded by Alder Hey Hospitals Trust, is backed by all three Knotty Ash ward councillors who say they get regular complaints from constituents about problems with parking around the hospital.

Councillor Nick Croft said neighbours had been suffering from problems linked to parking around Alder Hey for "years and years and years".

He said: "This is necessary - and it's been necessary for a very long time."

So far, these roads are set to become permit parking only between 7am and 7pm from Monday to Friday.

They are:
