Roads and shops flooded as heavy rain and thunder hits Merseyside

Roads and shops were flooded as heavy rain and thunder hit Merseyside.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning earlier today for thunderstorms. It warned of the potential of flooding, train and bus cancellations and difficult driving conditions.

Merseyside was hit with a number of flash floods, causing some roads to be closed. Springwood Avenue in Allerton was closed by police and fire service due to "severe flooding".

The main flooding was outside Allerton Hall (The Pub In The Park) and a cordon was in place stopping drivers from going down the road. In Mossley Hill, a woman had to be pulled from her car by firefighters after her car became stuck in floodwater.

Customers in the Tesco's Café in Cables Retail Park, Prescot were also greeted with rain pouring in from the roof. One woman told the ECHO: "When the rain started coming down really heavily, the roof started leaking and the parts of it fell in. The staff were brilliant getting everyone out safely. Can’t fault them at all.

"Everyone was quite calm. A couple of little kids were scared but mostly we all just stayed calm. The staff got everyone out through the back of the café in to the main shop area."

People also reported flooding in the city centre and in L25. Arriva also issued a statement to tell passengers a number of bus services were impacted.

A spokesperson said: "Due to severe traffic issues caused by local flooding, all Liverpool City Centre services are currently subject to delays and cancellations. We apologise for the inconvenience."

The West Kirby and New Brighton train lines were also impacted by the weather.
