Road worker, 24, suffers life changing injury in A465 Heads of the Valleys road crash

A 24-year-old who was working on the road has been left with "life changing" injuries following a serious crash on the A465 Head of the Valleys road.

A 37-year-old man from the Merthyr Tydfil area has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving without insurance.

The collision occurred following a police pursuit at around 12:10pm on Monday, November 23rd, on the A465 the Heads of the Valleys road, near Tredegar.

The police watchdog (Independent Office for Police Conduct) has been contacted also as police were in pursuit prior to the collision, though the police vehicle was not involved in the crash.

The 24-year-old was airlifted to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where he received treatment for injuries to his head and leg.

Police report the man is in a stable condition, but his injuries are believed to be life-changing.

Traffic was stopped in both directions to allow Wales Air Ambulance to access the scene, and the eastbound carriageway remained closed for almost six hours.

Gwent Police have released the 37-year-old man under investigation, and have asked anyone with information - such as dashcam footage - that could assist officers to come forward.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "We received a report of a road traffic collision on the A465 the Heads of the Valleys road, near Tredegar, at around 12.10pm on Monday 22 November.

"The collision involved a car and a road worker, who was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for treatment.

"The road worker, a 24-year-old man, has injuries to his head and leg. His condition is stable but his injuries are believed to be life changing.

"A 37-year-old man from the Merthyr Tydfil area was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving without insurance. He has been released under investigation.

"Enquiries are ongoing at this time and anyone with information that could assist our investigation, including CCTV or dashcam footage, should call 101, quoting log reference 2100409928.

"We’ve contacted the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in line with standard procedure as officers were involved in a pursuit prior to the collision."
