Road turns into 'something out of The Fast and The Furious' after illegal car meet

A busy Merseyside coastal road was "like a scene from The Fast and The Furious" as dozens of cars descended there yesterday evening.

Images show Marine Drive in Southport lined with people, as a number of cars pass.

Merseyside Police were called to the road at around 6.50pm yesterday (Sunday) to reports of 20-30 cars speeding, with some estimated as going up to 70mph.

Officers also say there were a number of minor crashes, though nobody was injured.

ExtremeBHP, a North West-based car enthusiasts group, held an event on Marine Drive yesterday.

Public posts on Facebook reported that the event was due to start between 6.30pm and 7pm, and that the event was a "static meet".

People were also reminded to follow coronavirus guidelines and not to "be d***s".

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) spoke to drivers in the area before groups were dispersed.

Inspector Carl McNulty from the Roads Policing Unit said: "This illegal event posed a real threat to the lives of both pedestrians and other road users in Southport yesterday, as well as the lives of the drivers taking part.

"The recklessness of some of the high-speed driving on display was irresponsible to say the least, and understandably a large number of people in the area of Marine Drive were concerned for everyone's safety.

"I'd like to stress that we treat reports of dangerous events such as these incredibly seriously. Those thinking of taking part in future are warned that police will also be in attendance, and anyone found to be driving illegally will be dealt with appropriately."

One woman said the road looked like "something out of The Fast and The Furious", while another said Southport had "become a version of Santa Pod".

She added: "There were people straying into the road, cars driving way too fast and no social distancing.

"We're still not out of lockdown so people need to act responsibly."

Organisers told the ECHO they have "no control over the way people drive away" from such events.
