Road to stay shut overnight following massive power cut in Tameside

A road in Tameside will stay closed overnight following a massive power cut.

Stamford Road in Mossley will remain shut until at least tomorrow (Saturday) as engineers work to fix the problem.

More than 1,000 homes and businesses were left without power after an underground cable was damaged.

A cloud of smoke could be seen above the street following the incident.

It is understood the cable was damaged at 1.26pm today (Friday).

Power was restored within 'minutes', a spokeswoman for Electricty North West said.

But engineers are still 'out there' working to fix the cause of the problem.

The spokeswoman said: "Hopefully it will reopen tomorrow, it all depends on what damage was caused."

Anyone who needs information during a power cut can follow Electricity North West on Twitter or Facebook for updates.

Alternatively call the company for free on 105.
