Road to remain closed for repairs after burst water main causes 'substantial damage'

Work to repair a burst water main – which affected supplies to homes in Portishead – will be completed this week.

A water main burst on Slade Road in the early hours of Saturday, July 13.

Crews from Bristol Water were quickly on scene and supplies were reinstated within a few hours.

However the burst caused substantial damage to the road, which remains closed off while it is repaired.

Work is continuing and expected to be completed later this week.

Slade Road is a busy cut-through in the town, with many using it to avoid traffic queues in the High Street.

A Bristol Water spokesman said: “Following a burst main on Slade road in Portishead in the early hours of Saturday morning customers were back in water within a few hours.

“There was significant damage to the road surface and this will be fully reinstated this week.”

A second water main at The Esplanade burst on Saturday afternoon – as organisers were setting up for the town’s Soapbox race on Sunday.

Temporary repairs were carried out with crews working through the night until 5.30am to ensure the race could go ahead as planned.

Work on a more permanent repair is now planned.

The spokesman added: “The leak close to the Soap Box race was identified on Saturday afternoon and repaired within a few hours so the event could take place on Sunday.

“We put in a temporary reinstatement which will be replaced as soon as is possible.”

The fact that two water mains – within close proximity of one another – burst within hours of each other has been blamed on the recent spell of hot weather.

The spokesman added: “When there are continued spells of hot weather there can be ground movement which can lead to burst pipes.”
