Road taped off as BMW overturns on busy street

A road was taped off after a BMW overturned in the middle of a busy street.

Merseyside Police rushed to Upper Aughton Road in Birkdale at around 2.35pm, following reports of a crash. Once officers arrived at the scene they found a BMW on its side in the middle of the road.

It is believed the car was involved in a crash with a Renault Kangoo before it rolled over. Police called for assistance from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) and North West Ambulance Service.

Two fire engines and a search and rescue team arrived three minutes after being called and found the drivers of both vehicles were out of their cars. Two people were taken to hospital by North West Ambulance Service for further assessment. Their injuries are not believed to be serious.

Upper Aughton Road was closed in both directions while emergency services responded to the incident. The road is still closed and police are asking people to avoid the area.

A MFRS spokesperson said: "We attended a road traffic collision on the junction of Upper Aughton Road and Everton Road earlier this afternoon. Crews were alerted at 2.41pm and on scene three minutes later.

"Two fire engines and the search and rescue appliance attended. On arrival, crews found two vehicles involved in the collision.

"The occupants of both cars were out on arrival. Two people were assessed by North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) then taken to hospital for further assessment. MFRS crews left the scene at 15.14pm."
