Road shut as old and crumbling Liverpool pub is demolished

A Liverpool road is shut this afternoon as work takes place to demolish a crumbling former pub.

The city council announced a closure of part of Thirlmere Road in Everton between Coniston Street and Ullswater Street from early this morning so that workers could take down the former The Standard pub.

The building that housed the pub, and later became Ritchie’s Bar, stands on the corner with Ullswater Road.

It is in extremely poor condition, with photos taken today showing the building effectively looking like a shell.

Parts of its brick walls and roof have collapsed, with wooden hoardings propped against the insides of parts of the building, while scaffolding is attached to the Thirlmere Road side.

Metal hoardings have been attached to the window and door frames at ground floor level to prevent trespassers.

It is hoped that Thirlmere Road will be able to reopen tomorrow pending a safety inspection.

In a tweet announcing the road closure yesterday, Liverpool Council said: “A section of Thirlmere Road in Everton will be closed from 8am tomorrow – from Coniston St to Ullswater St – to enable demolition of a structurally unsound building. It is expected the road will be reopened the following day, subject to a safety inspection.”

It is not known exactly how long the building has been vacant, with The Standard later reopening as Ritchie’s before closing completely.
