Road safety review to be launched in Ralston after petition highlights traffic and parking problems

Council bosses have agreed to carry out a road safety review in the Ralston area of Paisley after concerns were raised about the level of traffic and dodgy parking.

The review is expected to look at what measures could be brought in around the Hawkhead and Arkleston Road corridor which has become increasingly busy over the years.

It will inspect the entire route from the roundabout junction at Barrhead Road to Penilee Road at Queen Elizabeth Avenue.

A decision to look at the area came on the back of a petition from a Mr H Lister which called for double yellow lines to be put down in Gartmore Road.

Mr Lister - along with more than 40 other signatories - claimed people living in Hawkhead Road were not using their own driveways and parking on or near the junction with Gartmore Road, creating a narrow entrance to the street.

He has insisted the unsafe parking is putting schoolkids at risk, especially as many drivers also use the road as a shortcut to avoid traffic lights at the junction of Glasgow Road and Hawkhead Road.

Roads chiefs said they would be happy to look at launching a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process to try and get these lines painted, despite the fact this could take a year to complete.

But councillors also agreed to a motion lodged by Ralston councillor Jim Sharkey, which called for a wider review of roads in the area to ensure the problem in Gartmore Road isn't simply displaced.

During the latest meeting of the petitions board, Mr Lister said: "Parking by residents in Hawkhead Road at the entrance to Gartmore Road severely reduces the space for vehicles to enter or leave Gartmore Road.

"Vans parked at the corner of Gartmore Road definitely obscure the views of children crossing the road. Some park up the pavement so that makes it difficult for people with prams. It’s a dangerous corner.

"It’s only a matter of time before there is a bump."

Councillor Sharkey added: "I have suggested the Hawkhead Road and Arkleston Road corridor is reviewed as a whole. There’s no point in us putting yellow lines down on one street if that’s just going to move the problem.

"We have a road [Hawkhead and Arkleston Road] which is effectively a bypass road but it was never designed for that. I would like to see the roads department come up with a proper plan for the whole area."

Ralston resident Kenny Gough - who said he frequently parks his car in Gartmore Road - hit out at the petition from Mr Lister in a letter to the board.

He branded the wording in the petition as "aggressive" and said residents of Gartmore Road had not approached people who leave their cars to discuss the problem.

He added it was "untrue" residents in Hawkhead Road were not using their driveways and said the cars parked in Gartmore Road were overflow from driveways.

In his letter, he called for a more detailed solution to the issue than just yellow lines.

Mr Gough said: "This needs a full traffic management plan that meets the needs of all the residents of Hawkhead, Lanfine, Gartmore and Newtyle Roads and I would encourage Renfrewshire Council to address it in the whole."

Elected members agreed unanimously to a wider road safety review and once this has been completed, officers will assess whether any TROs are required within the area.
