Road Safety Authority hits out at Conor McGregor for filming himself while driving

The Road Safety Authority has hit out at Conor McGregor after footage emerged of the Dubliner filming himself while driving.

The Notorious, who announced his retirement from MMA for the third time in four years earlier this month, posted a clip on his Instagram story from behind the wheel of his luxurious Bentley convertible on Wednesday.

Appearing to show a disregard for the law in Ireland prohibiting using a mobile phone while driving, the 31-year-old even films the busy traffic around him in the video.

The camera moves around and takes in, among other things, the UFC star's designer watch believed to be a gold Patek Philippe Nautilus watch, worth over €80,000.

McGregor wears a black tracksuit and cap in the clip, and he smiles at the camera and chews gum throughout. He is the only person in the car.

Responding to the video, the RSA stated that driver distraction is estimated to be a factor in 20% to 30% of fatal crashes each year and added that those with a high profile have an added responsibility to practice good road safety habits.

A spokesperson for the RSA told The Irish Mirror: "International research indicates that driver distraction is estimated to be a factor in 20% to 30% of fatal crashes annually. The most common form of driver distraction is using a mobile phone while driving.

"Drivers are four times more likely to crash while using a hand held phone than someone who is not using a phone (TRL UK). This risk increases significantly if texting while driving. Those who use a hand held phone while driving risk getting three penalty points and a fine of €60.

"Those who have a high profile in society have an added responsibility to practice good road safety habits as their behaviour can often influence the behaviour of those who look up to them.

The Crumlin man already has a series of driving offences to his name and was given a six-month ban from driving in November 2018 after he was caught speeding at 154kmh on the N7 in Kildare.
