Road restrictions announced as Nottingham Trent University students return to city

Plans have been put in place to alleviate traffic issues on Nottingham's roads when students return to the city next month.

Nottingham City Council has announced a number of changes to the city's roads, which will be in place between September 23 and September 27 as Nottingham Trent University students arrive.

The council estimates 1,736 students will arrive across the five days into the university's halls of residence, with NTU extending its arrivals weekend to make "allowances for social distancing".

As part of the measures, Gill Street will have a one-way system between Peel Street and Dryden Street, with no stopping allowed at any time on the north and south sides.

Hampton Street will also have a one-way system between Peel Street and Dryden Street, while there will be no stopping allowed for the entire length of Peel Street.

Dryden Street will also have a one-way system between Dundas Close and the junction of Peel Street and Fulforth Street.

A spokesperson for the city council said: "To facilitate the continuous flow of traffic through the city centre on Wednesday, September 23 to Sunday, September 27, 2020 during the University's arrivals weekend.

"1,736 students will be arriving into five residences. This has been extended this year due to making allowances for social distancing."
