WHAT is the point of Road Record? Why does so much effort go in to doing all that we do to bring you the supplement you love? I suggest it is because you matter.
I am massively honoured to write this column. It is an opportunity for me to pass on what little I have learned from the roles I have performed and the things I have experienced.
Road Record is a carefully crafted information, news and commercial injection into your week, designed to entertain and inform. But it is much more than that, for me. Road Record is an opportunity.
It is a chance for you to seek answers and fundamentally do something different, for without research and basic knowledge, you have no starting point.
Oscar Wilde captured my point thus: “Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.”
My take on Oscar’s wisdom is that you learn most by experiencing things yourself. There is no substitute in the world for getting out there, getting your hands dirty and feeling the thing you are doing.
Cars are all about emotions and feelings. Road Record is a great place to get facts and figures, some of us even give our opinions, but you are the one person that counts – because the car is yours. One driver’s box on wheels is another person’s car of their dreams.
I really struggle to buy a car without having driven it first. I know the internet is full of cars that you can order online but it’s not for me. If my bum has not been in the driver’s seat, I am not going to fork out money for any vehicle.
As more and more manufacturers take deposits for cars that are little more than a designer’s sketch, I guess I am rapidly becoming a dinosaur, needing to drive the car before I buy it.
My conclusion is that knowledge becomes even more important as prototypes sell real cars. And Road Record is more important than ever in reaching a decision to part with hard-earned cash.
