Road recarpeting resumes after break in Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: After a gap of almost three months, the engineering department of the municipal corporation (MC) has resumed road recarpeting in the city after the monsoon season.

Initially, the work has started in sectors 22 and 45. Other areas will be covered in the coming days.

The work will again stop during the winter season. Sources in the civic body said the engineering department will try its level best to complete all pending work of the previous financial year. “Senior officials and quality control teams assess the material and other parameters before the work starts,” sources said.

“A total of 121km of roads were recarpeted with Rs 20 crore before the monsoon. Now, the work to recarpet 100km of road has resumed. A detailed plan in this regard has already been prepared and work is being done accordingly by issuing instructions to the contractors,” sources said.

A majority of the area is of parking lots of key commercial areas. “Around 30km parking area of Sector 17 is part of the 100 km road. Besides, huge area of parking of Sector 35 market is also the part of the road recarpeting. Sector dividing roads and internal roads of some sectors will also be repaired,” a senior officer said.

Work of Rs 38 crore was allotted in March. Some previous pending work was also there. It was completed before the monsoon. The contractors were facing major issue of labourers earlier. As a result, the pace was slow but it had improved later.
