Road rager jailed for biting schoolgirl, stealing car

A road rager has been locked up for at least 14 months after "terrorising" a schoolgirl by punching and biting her before stealing the teenager's car and phone.

Trudy Pearl Murray, 27, was sentenced in the ACT Supreme Court on Thursday to a total jail term of two years and eight months for aggravated robbery and common assault.

She committed the offences on October 24 last year, when the occupants of a Toyota Corolla noticed "assorted items" being thrown from a Holden Astra carrying Murray and her then-partner, Akeem Alberts, in Stirling.

The two young women in the Corolla questioned what was going on with hand gestures, which Justice Michael Elkaim said were not offensive but which had nevertheless apparently enraged Murray and Alberts.

The Astra crashed into the rear of the Corolla, from which the passenger used her mobile phone to film what was happening.

When both vehicles came to a stop after a second deliberate collision, Murray and Alberts jumped out.

Justice Elkaim said Alberts ripped open one of the Toyota's doors and brandished a knife, while Murray hopped into the back seat.

"The driver of the Corolla, obviously very scared, jumped onto the front passenger," the judge said.

"[Murray] punched the passenger in her right eye and took her mobile telephone. In order to secure the telephone she bit the passenger's right wrist for about five seconds."

The victims ran away in fear, leaving Murray and Alberts with the Corolla, which they drove off in.

Police located the couple and the car later the same day.

Justice Elkaim said the passenger bitten and punched by Murray was a Year 12 student who owned the Corolla, which was being driven prior to the robbery by one of her friends.

The judge said the incident had clearly had "a very marked effect" on the two young women, who each provided victim impact statements.

In hers, the passenger described having panic attacks and feeling anxious and unsafe while driving or alone in the wake of the incident.

Her relationships have suffered and she is receiving psychological treatment, having started to self-harm.

The driver has also required some treatment and reported finding her first year of university "very difficult".

"The whole incident was uncalled for," Justice Elkaim said.

"A knife was involved. Two young women were terrorised. Physical injury was inflicted. Mental injury will be felt for a long time."

The judge said Murray, the eldest of 14 siblings, had ended with her relationship with Alberts since the incident "in the hope that she can distance herself from his antisocial behaviour".

He added that the 27-year-old mother had "correctly" described her actions as "stupid", telling a pre-sentence report author she was "disgusted in her behaviour".

Murray, who has a wide-ranging criminal history, had already served some of her backdated jail term in pre-sentence custody.

She will be eligible for parole in February next year.

Alberts was also sentenced earlier this year to two years and eight months in jail, but he received a longer non-parole period of 18 months.
