Shot fired after road rage incident, police say

Police are appealing for information from the public after a road rage incident ended with one of the drivers shooting at the other vehicle.

Police said officers were called to Fullerton Street at Stockton just after 7pm on Tuesday following reports of a road rage incident.

Investigators have been told the driver of a Mitsubishi ASX produced what is believed to be a shortened rifle and fired it at a Toyota Hilux ute.

IN THE NEWS:

The Mitsubishi driver left the scene and was last seen turning onto King Street, Stockton.

Newcastle police are investigating.

The man who was in the vehicle that was allegedly fired on is assisting police with their inquiries.

It is not yet known whether the two drivers knew each other - police are still working to identify the driver who fled.

The Newcastle Herald understands there was no crash or serious traffic incident before the road rage incident.

The Hilux driver was not injured in the shooting.

They are appealing to anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual in the Fullerton Street area at the time - or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident - to contact Newcastle Police Station on 4929 0999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
