Road rage culprit in Japan found guilty

MITO -- Fumio Miyazaki, a 45-year-old company executive, was found guilty in connection to a case that led to the establishment of the "obstruction of driving" provision in June under the Road Traffic Act.

The Mito District Court sentenced Miyazaki on Oct. 2 to two years and six months in prison for dangerously driving on expressways. He was released with four years of probation. Neither prosecutors nor defendants appealed the ruling by the Friday deadline, finalizing the verdict.

The "obstruction of driving" provision was not established in 2019 when Miyazaki dangerously drove on expressways in Ibaraki, Aichi and Shizuoka prefectures. At the time, he was charged with extortion and bodily injury.

Miyazaki repeatedly cut off the victim and drove at low speeds on the Joban Expressway in Moriya, Ibaraki Prefecture. The victim's dashboard camera recorded the footage, which was featured in newspapers and on television.
