Road rage: 2 arrested for killing man in east Delhi

NEW DELHI: Five days after a 20-year-old man was killed in a road rage incident in Samaspur village in east Delhi, the 36-year-old accused, Piyush, owner of a ready-made garments business, and his nephew, Deepanshu (20), have been arrested.

Piyush told police that he was returning from work when his scooter brushed against a pedestrian, who was walking along with his friend. A heated argument ensued and it ended in a scuffle between them. As Piyush was outnumbered, he called his nephew to the spot. Both of them then attacked 20-year-old Nikhil Sharma with a pen knife, which gave him sharp injuries and resulted in his death.

Police got a call from Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital regarding Sharma’s admission, who was declared brought dead.

DCP (East) Priyanka Kashyap said, “Prima facie, it appears that Sharma and his friend got into an altercation with a man when his scooter touched them outside a wine shop in Samaspur village. While they were returning after purchasing liquor, the scooter rider came back with his associate and a scuffle broke out between them. One of them hit Sharma on the chest with a pointed object, which injured him and he later succumbed to it.”

Sharma’s father, Manoj, had earlier told TOI that his son used to work at a call centre at night and earned a decent salary. “It was his day off on Sunday and he left home on foot along with his friend Sunny. The scooter rider, who we think was drunk, hit Sunny and my son after they told him to ride carefully. From what we have heard, he was also driving on the wrong side,” said Manoj.

According to Manoj, Piyush and his nephew started hitting Sunny and his son intervened to save him. Later, they hit Sharma on the chest with a sharp object. “We were told that it was a key. But I don’t think a key can lead to such a fatal injury,” said the father.
