Road in Tameside shut after crash between car and tram

A road in Tameside has been closed following a crash between a car and a tram.

Emergency services rushed to Droylsden Road, Droylsden during rush hour this evening (Friday).

The road has been closed near the junction with Williamson Lane, with traffic heading towards Manchester forced to divert.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed a car was involved in a collision with a tram at around 5.30pm.

No injuries have been reported.

Metrolink confirmed the Ashton-under-Lyne line was partially suspended.

A tweet from the service operator read: "Due to a road traffic collision, the Ashton-under-Lyne line is currently part suspended.

"Services will operate Droylsden to Eccles via Media City.

"Tickets and passes are being accepted on 216 & 217 bus services."

Traffic is building in the area, with heavy congestion on nearby roads.

The 216 service between Manchester and Ashton run by Stagecoach is being diverted.

Buses heading towards the city centre will be heaading via Ashton New Road and Williamson Lane before turing to Ashton Hill Lane, and Market Street, before returning to the regular route.

It is not yet clear when the road will reopen.
