Road in north Manchester closed over 'fears it is going to collapse'

A road in north Manchester has been closed off by police over fears it may collapse.

Police arrived on Slack Road in Blackley around 3pm and blocked it off at either end.

Residents say a stretch of the road surface had become unstable to drive over.

One said it had become 'like a fairground ride' to drive over.

And after the authorities were alerted police came to block it off whilst Manchester City council highways engineers were scrambled.

A town hall spokesman confirmed to the Manchester Evening News it had been closed due to "subsidence."

"Our engineers are assessing the cause of the damage and the road will remain closed pending this assessment and necessary repairs" he added.

Carl Robinson's partner Sarah Laidler lives close to the damaged stretch which was initially covered with a wheelie bin.

Carl, 37, said: "People have buying saying it was dodgy to drive over.

"One said it was like a fairground round when she went over it.

"It's not a sinkhole yet but it looks like it's pretty close to caving in,

"We're not sure who reported it but quite a few police turned up and blocked it off at either end.

"They are not allowing anyone near it."
