Road in Bramcote remains closed after wall collapsed into path of traffic

A road in Bramcote remains closed after part of a wall collapsed into the path of traffic over the weekend.

At around 1.30pm on Sunday, February 7, bricks, mud and debris tumbled into the middle the road where Town Street meets Chilwell Lane.

As a result the typically busy road was closed by Nottinghamshire Police, and the closure remains in place as of Monday, February 8.

The corner is known locally as 'Devil's Bend'.

It was closed for a number of weeks back in 2019 while work to reinforce the concrete walls and improve the safety of the road was conducted.

A blockade has been established and a sign has been put up informing motorists to seek an alternative route.

It reads: 'Emergency road closure. Please find alternative route.'

Speaking of the incident on Sunday, Sergeant Iain Blackstock said: "It appears the wall has completely given way on to the highway probably as a result of all the adverse weather we have had lately - extreme rainfall followed by freezing temperatures.

"No one was injured and there haven't been any further incidents as a result but it's good that we were quickly informed and able to put safety measures in place.

"Officials from the local council have attended the scene and are arranging for a structural engineer to assess the damage in order to get it fixed.

"The road's likely to remain closed for the rest of the day at least so motorists will need to avoid the area. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause."
