Road cordoned off after part of 'dangerous' home collapses

A road was cordoned off after part of a "dangerous" terraced house collapsed.

Fire crews were called to North Hill Street in Toxteth at 1.32pm on Wednesday and arrived on scene seven minutes later. At the scene, firefighters found bricks falling from the first floor of a three storey terraced house on the corner of Teilo Street.

Three fire engines and the search and rescue team attended, and a cordon was put in place at the top of Teilo Street. Photos showed a pile bricks left sprawled across the edge of the pavement and into the road.

One neighbour, who witnessed what happened on her way home from the corner shop, told the ECHO the house has been "dangerous for a while now".

The woman, who did not want to be named, said: "Water has been leaking out of the front of the house for about four weeks now from above the window.

"The bricks have looked ready to go. The gate around the back of the house used to keep getting broken into and gangs of people were going in there.

"I saw a police van passing on the way back from the paper shop and flagged it down. They put a cordon in place and called the fire service."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Following consultation with building control, it was determined there was no immediate risk of building collapse. Two firefighters were committed to conduct a full internal search of the property and found no persons inside.

"The incident was handed over to building control. MFRS crews left the scene at 2.31pm."
