Road closures to complete UK's first cycling and walking junction in south Manchester

Road closures will take place in south Manchester this week in order to complete a junction separating cyclists from general traffic.

From tomorrow (June 18), the Royce Road junction in Hulme will be closed to traffic in all directions until Sunday.

The closure will allow resurfacing work to take place, as part of a £13.4 million 'CYCLOPS', standing for Cycle Optimised Protected Signals, project from the council.

The work will also include the installation of new traffic lights.

Subject to weather conditions, the junction will reopen on Monday.

Designed to fully separate cyclists from general traffic, the 'CYCLOPS' junction will connect Chorlton to the city centre while also improving safety for all road users.

The 5km route will run along Barlow Moor Road, Manchester Road, Upper Chorlton Road and Chorlton Road, with cyclists and pedestrians given priority over cars in key areas.

Following the reopening of the Hulme junction, temporary signals will remain in place until permanent lights can be switched on.

The new layout is aimed to be fully operational by next Friday (June 26), which will be the first junction of its kind in the UK.

Construction work on the project began in January, which has also seen the creation of segregated cycle lanes along Chorlton Road, from Chester Road to Stretford Road.

The next phase of the scheme will see improvements to cycling and walking infrastructure on Chorlton Road between Stretford Road and Moss Lane East.

Executive Member for the Environment, Planning and Transport, Councillor Angeliki Stogia, said: “This is a big step forward in our work to create permanent, high-quality cycling and walking infrastructure which will support the long-term shift to active travel that we want to see right across the city.

“The trailblazing new CYCLOPS junction will maximise opportunities for safer cycling and walking in this area and we are really proud and excited to deliver this innovative project.

"And it is only the latest milestone in our ambitious plans to invest in a network of safe routes for people travelling on foot or by bike.

“We're continuing to move forward with our £79m pipeline of projects, which will enable more people across the city to make the switch to walking and cycling for their everyday journeys.”
