Road closed off after smoke spotted billowing from manhole

A road was closed off by police after smoke was spotted coming from a manhole.

Merseyside Police sealed off part of Westminister Road in Kirkdale as fire crews investigated reports of smoke rising from a manhole at 12.22pm today.

A fire engine was quickly on scene and crews found the smoke was coming from an electric access pit.

A team from Scottish Power attended and have been assisting the emergency services to make the area safe.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: [We were] called to Westminster Road, Liverpool, on Wednesday, July 28 following reports of smoke issuing from a manhole.

"Crews were alerted at 12.22pm and on scene at 12.26pm. One fire engine attended.

"On arrival crews found smoke issuing from an electric access pit. Firefighters liaised with Scottish Power and laid out a covering branch as a precaution.

"No further action was required from fire crews, with the incident now being handed over to Scottish Power.

"The road has been closed by Merseyside Police."
